TIME x Intel: Bringing AI Everywhere

To illustrate the impact AI has already had on the world as well as its future potential, Red Border by TIME and Intel teamed up to recreate some of TIME’s most iconic covers. The human creatives and scientists leading the effort treated the AI software as a creative team getting briefed on a campaign, prompting the bot with many of the same thoughts, ideas, and direction that went into designing the original covers. The teams broke down each cover piece by piece, then put those individual elements back together using the AI software, which generated a new and wholly original artwork.

With the help of AI, Red Border and Intel redesigned 2023’s “The End of Humanity,” 2006’s “Person of the Year: You,” 1982’s “The Computer Moves In,” 1989’s “Endangered Earth,” and TIME’s first ever cover in 1923. The original covers treat the new technology or phenomenon they spotlight as human subjects, and each redesign translates the existential questions posed by these covers into hopes and promises offered by the age of AI.
